I'm trying to find it on tv, but a firetruck got caught in a sinkhole THREEHOURSAGO and is just sitting there doing absolutely nothing, yet all the news channels find it necessary to give it LIVE BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE, instead of showing what our president gotsta say. I guess it's a good thing I read his speech last night, so I have an idea what he's gonna say, but still! Come on! It's just a firetruck in a sinkhole, no deaths, it's just hanging out at this point! Argh, I effin hate the media

I watched all 20 min. of his speech, and sure enough, he didn't say anything that George Bush or Ronald Reagan woulda said when they did the same thing. He basically said that kids need to work hard in school; that they can't make excused for themselves; that not all of them can be successful because they'll be celebrities one day; that mistakes are okay; that we should all become socialists...errr...jk.

No but really, I still don't get why everyone was freaking out.

Im watching his address right now on tv and he pisses me off., He basically wants to force people and buisnesses into health insurance. he's making it so you have to have it through your employer or the government.

Socialism isn't always bad. There are a lot of socialist institutions in America. Doesn't mean everything should be socialist (that's just not realistic), but some things really work. Perfect example: libraries. Our taxes go towards this institution whose entire goal is to amass as much knowledge as possible into central hubs, and in return, we are able to use these massive databases free of charge. The USPS; I can't imagine being forced to use a private company or having something like that be controlled by each individual state. Some things just work well.

I can't speak for health care, because I don't know enough about it, but I do know that something needs to be done. What we have is clearly off when you look at other countries. Granted, we're bigger, but we've also got so many resources. I find it hard to believe we couldn't have a health care system that ranks in the TOP 30 (we're #37; Canada is 30, Saudi Arabia is 26, Ireland and UK are 19 and 18, respectively, and France is #1).

I dont have health insurance. I don't want it either, why? It's not affordable, but Obama's plan is going to make individuals such as myself, have insurance, which I can't afford. And it's going to be run by the governement?! I dont want health insurance ran by our government and as an American I should have the right to decide If I do or not, it should not be forced upon me.

Just as I think its BULLSHIT that we are required in the state of texas to carry car insurance. When you get pulled over and do not have proof of car insurance THEY CAN TOW YOUR CAR... OMG do you know what BULLSHIT that is? America, the free country. FREE my ass. We are turning into a bunch of socialist.... "ooooooh lets help out everyone, equal oportunity for everyone...." ... I have never had a lot of money but you don't see me asking for wellfare and food stamps. Why does my hard earned money have to go to helping others when I NEED what I earn. Obama is just gonna raise my taxes and make me pay even more for shit that doesnt help me at all. It's gonna hurt a lot of Americans and I dont think there is anything that will make me change my mind about Obama's Health Care Reform Bill.

Im a capitalist. What I earn as income, should NOT be taxed. I should be able to do what i want with my money. Nothing should be forced upon me by anyone. Health Insurance, Car Insurance.... or anything that violates my rights. I've never been in an accident that was my fault and I hate having to spend money for insurance that I NEVER USE.

I thought someone told me that Obama's plan had the option of using private health care services, like having the option to use UPS or FedEx, or similar parcel services? I dunno if that's true. I haven't read or listened to his proposal, and I heard it through word of mouth, lol. Not exactly a credible source XD

Today he said that buisnesses would be required to carry health insurance for their employees. And that if you can't afford it, the government will provide a government health care option (the public option) for you at a cheaper price (or give you a waiver to pay for it). But why do I have to have Health Care Insurance At All??? That man should not fuck with my rights. If I want health care insurance, I'll go get it myself and pay for it. I really don't see why people would allow a government to force things upon them. It completely baffles me.

Like Boyd's employer.... they are going to be forced to take payment out of his paycheck every payday to pay for health insurance. If you can't afford it, you have to prove you can't afford it, and I'm sure there is a bunch of stupid freaking paper work for that.

Right now we make the choice not to pay for it cause we can't afford it, we shouldnt be required to prove that to anyone to get a waiver for something we don't want. They are already taking Social Security out of our paychecks by which when the time comes for us to all be old enough to qaulify for social security, there isn't going to be any... it's a joke.

lol next they are going to outlaw alcohol, because you might get liver cancer and "the government can't afford to cover that".... or cigarettes... because you might get lung cancer..... or sugar.... cause it makes you fat and gives people diabetes.... probably one of the leading causes of heart attacks..... i mean really, whats next.... i have to have a liscense to own a pet??? lol it's rediculous.

That last thing you posted reminded me of something, lol. I once wrote a paper in one of my psychology classes that pissed EVERYONE off, but that was the point. We were supposed to write on the topic of eating disorders, and I chose to write about extreme obesity and whatnot. I said that one of two things needed to be done: either people shouldn't be able to get financial assistance for bariatric operations, or the government should create stricter regulations via the FDA on what can and cannot be sold as "food."

Needless to say, people got pissed, and it sparked a big debate...which was my entire goal I just want to say that I don't support either of those propositions, but I do think that the idea was necessary to get the people in my class thinking about personal accountability and responsibility when it comes to certain health issues. Sure, you should be able to do something that's harmful to your health; it's your body...but don't complain when something happens, ya know?

I think that having health insurance is so important and so necessary, because you honestly never know when you will need it - but you are SO grateful if the time comes that you do. I know my family never thought we would, but it's definitely come in handy in a few instances. When I got in my accident and broke my leg real bad, the total bill ended up being over $70,000, between the $4,500 helicopter ride to the nearest hospital, to 9-day hospital stay, the 3 surgeries, to the doctor visits, to the physical therapy. Could my family have afforded to pay for that? Hell no, we don't have 70 grand just lying around, and if we didn't have health insurance we would still be paying the bills on that, 8 years later. None of us ever thought someone in our family would get cancer, but when my dad was diagnosed, not having health insurance would have literally killed him AND us in trying to afford it, since it's already been over $150,000 since just this January, between his initial hospital stay, to all the radiation, chemotherapy, physical therapy, stem cell harvest and transplant, 21 day hospital isolation stay that he just got home from today, medications.... you name it! I know people say you can't live your life according to the 'what-ifs', but when it comes to your LIFE, that's one thing where the what-ifs truly matter, and you should take any and all precautions to protect your most precious investment - yourself. Yes, it sucks when some employers don't offer health insurance or make you pay for some or all of it, or you (fortunately) have never seen the need in having it, but I bet every single one of you would be singing a different tune if something tragic happened to you and you didn't have it but desperately needed it.

If private insurance companies were to lower their insurance rates, I might consider getting health insurance, but its too expensive and I dont want ANYTHING that is run by our government. Simple as that. And I'll say it again, as an AMERICAN, I should have the CHOICE to carry Health Insurance, or NOT. It shouldnt be forced upon me. Nothing should ever be forced upon someone.

I don't REALLY wanna get involved because I feel like I must not know about it that much because what I had gathered from the healthcare reform was that it was forcing businesses to offer health insurance to their employees and not forcing the employees to take it...though that's not absurd...just ask the entire state of Massachusetts where it's been illegal to not have health insurance when you can afford it for years.

All I understood from it was forcing businesses to offer their employees health insurance, which, good thing. It's so rare in many fields to have that opportunity of getting health insurance through your employer rather than having to go out and get it on your own (which is much more expensive) unless you're in a union...or at least in New York it is. Starbucks employees get insurance but you can work at a big firm here and get nothing for years and years. And that is bullshit. My friend Manda is a waitress, which is one of those things where good luck if you want your employer to give you health insurance, and she broke her hip (I'm not going to get into how...but it's a good story) and has no health insurance so couldn't even go to a hospital or doctor or anything...and had to work in a job that required her to stand and walk around all day. So of course she couldn't do that, lost lots of money because of it and almost lost her job. With the new proposal it would make her employer give her the opportunity to get health insurance through them. I just think that's a good thing. If it forces everyone to get health insurance unless they can't afford it, that's stupid, but maybe the other aspects of it outweigh that in the big picture.

The other thing I've understood from the reform is offering the governmental health care (which already exists) at much lower costs forcing a more competative market for private insurers. And I believe there's going to be more governmental involvement in the private companies for the same reason.

I guess I just don't see more affordable health care readily available to everyone as a bad thing.

I've been reading this for a while and I have to say that I see both sides but ultimately agree with Mandie but for some different reasoms.

1st) As an American, I don't feel the government should be forcing me to have anything.
2nd) I also don't agree with taxes being raised and they are definitely going to. 3rd) Our country is already in huge debt, we need to take care of that before implementing such a costly reform

I got sick recently, as most of you know, and I went to the doctor, WITHOUT INSURANCE. I was treated within 30 minutes of arriving at a walk in clinic with no appointment. I went straight to a local pharmacy with my prescriptions and had them filled within 15 minutes. It took less than 1 hour to go see a doctor with no appointment and return home with medication in hand. And three days later when I still was coughing my head off, I simply called the doctor back and asked him for more meds. He called in a prescription to my pharmacy, and I was able to pick THAT prescription up 30 minutes later....... I paid cash... for the office visit and my meds.... And I did it ALL without health insurance and it worked out just fine as it always has for me. SCREW YOU OBAMA AND YOUR HEALTH CARE REFORM THATS A COMPLETE JOKE lol

Yeah, I was just going to say, the difference between the two was probably like $60 but that's fine.

All I know is I have a prescription that costs me $15/refill, without insurance it would be more like $275 - and that's not even the most expensive one I could be prescribed, so...yeah.
