| The first book I learned to read with was Curious George and the Pizza, and I used many other George books to help me learn to read. I also had Bernstein Bears (and a TV Teddy to read with me!), Amelia Bedelia, and Little Critter for when I was still picture-booking it up. Then I moved onto stuff like the Bailey School Kids (Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots, Ghosts Don't Eat Potato Chips, etc.), Goosebumps, and Animorphs Whaboutchoo? | |

| I wish I knew but I have no idea.
I know I used to be obsessed with Goodnight Moon and I could recite the whole thing so maybe that was a part of it.

| Oh, oh! There was this book called "Mr. Sillypants Goes to the Beach," and I memorized it, but claimed I could read it, so I brought it to school to read in front of the class, but I got nervous, so I forgot what it said, and I was totally exposed as a faker.
Talk about embarrassing first-grade moments!

Talk about embarrassing first-grade moments! That is the cutest story ever told.

| I can't remember when or what I started reading, but the first reading memory I have is from when I was in 1st grade. Our teacher would read Magic Tree House books to the class at a really slow pace. I ended up getting all the books out of the library and reading them myself so I could actually find out what happened at the end rather than waiting for weeks.
Then later that year, I started reading Animorphs, which got me really interested in science fiction. I vaguely remember reading some Bailey School Kids and Goosebumps books, but Animorphs was the first series I read from start to finish. I'd buy the newest book every month from 1st to 5th grade.

| YES ANIMORPHS FTW!
And I remember in first grade we had our reading groups, and they were all named after dinosaurs. One was a T-Rex (red), one was a Brontosaurus (blue), and one was a Triceratops (yellow). I don't remember which group was which as far as reading level, but I remember sitting in a circle each taking a turn with a page (which of course was like...a five-word-long sentence max).
Oh, and did I mention that the dinosaurs made noises if you squeezed them?

| The first Novel (non-children's novel) I ever read was Jurassic Park. Then I read Sphere and Congo and Andromeda Strain. I was a little into Crichton when I was in elementary school and did a book report on Sphere in the 6th grade and everyone thought I was very weird.
Then the kid who pretended he was a robot (or just thought he was...he might have been crazy...he got into an actual fight once and it didn't go well because he was priming his lasers when he got punched in the face) did a book report on The Fountain Head and suddenly I wasn't he center of attention anymore.

| Yeah. I loved that kid. I mean not really. I hated being around him because he spoke in a robot voice. But I loved how HE was the weird one all the time. | |
