My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction Empty
PostSubject: My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction   My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction EmptyTue May 18, 2010 6:24 pm

So I've come to the conclusion, and I've told a couple of you about this already, that I think I have a legitimate addiction to spending money. Here are some reasons why I think so:

1. I have never been able to save money. Ever.
2. I pretty much "spend" my paycheck before I get it, meaning I plan out what I'm gonna buy before I even have it.
3. I have many times waited until the exact hour I know the bank will stop processing transactions the night before I get paid, so I know I can overdraft without penalty, because I know my direct deposit will go through before the bank notices.
4. I overdraft unknowingly a lot.
5. I get real, actual pleasure from buying things; I'm a therapeutic shopper. It relieves my stress, and I wouldn't be surprised if it produced endorphins in my brain that said, "This is awesome."

I mean, I'm not trying to be all, "Oh no, I have a problem..it's not my fault..." It's totally my fault.

Which brings me to the topic of this thread: I will be receiving a $600 check from the government this week, and I need to figure out the most responsible plan of action for this money. I don't trust myself very much anymore when it comes to deciding what is necessary and what is not necessary for me to spend money on. I'm really good add justifying my purchases...even the ridiculous ones.

So when I get this check, my priority is a pair of tennis shoes, because I don't have any at all. Like, not even cruddy ones. Seem legit?

When Boyd gets paid, he does a budget

Gas
Grocery
Cigs
Bud
Car Insurance
Cable
Electric
Rent
Water/Trash
Phone
Bottled Water
Car Registration (have to get a temporary one every month)

After all that has been subtracted, he gives me the rest of his money. I stash it and save it for vacations or, eating out, or new shoes/clothes... birthday, holidays, etc.

I only alot myself a certain amount on eating out and entertainment every month.

If you dont have any bills..... take a part of your check and say: This is all im going to spend, the rest im going to save.

Yeah...it's just a matter of actually doing it. It's like trying to quit smoking...you tell yourself that you don't need to smoke, that's it's expensive, that it's unhealthy, this and that and everything in between...as you're walking to the store to buy your next pack.

I get my paycheck, and tell myself to leave it alone, and I say I shouldn't be spending any money...as I'm swiping my card at Walmart on shit I don't need Laughing

I have the same problem, but I also go through bouts of saving. But then I get to the point where I think I have 'free money' like I paid for this big doctor bill, and then I get $500 in the mail because my insurance was wrong and they DID cover it and I was like "OMG, FREE $500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and I'm already going "WHAT CAN I SPEND IT ON????????" but so far I haven't done it. I've been able to talk myself out of spending any money on myself that wasn't for basic necessities made luxurious (like eating out or designer air).

I'm gonna have to be really careful, because there're already a bunch of things I'm considering...the tennis shoes (I even at one point was like, "Well, maybe I'll get two pairs: one for actually running, and one for bad weather, so I don't ruin the running ones..." see???), a new piercing (so unnecessary), a tattoo (even more unnecessary), new bedding stuff (could use it, but not necessary), a DS (since I had to sell mine; but that seems like it would be counterproductive), a rec center membership (don't REALLY need it, but REALLY want it for the summer), and all kinds of other random shit...none of which is necessary.

I need to keep that word in mind: necessary.

Every time I see this topic I keep thinking it's gonna say "1st challenge combating autism" or something along those lines. Random, but there you go.

First of all, Mo said "designer air" lulz.

Um...I have had so many people tell me the earlier you start saving the better you will be in the future...and I completely agree.

SO DON'T SPEND THE 600 DOLLARS.

Don't you have a meal plan if you're on campus?

Probably not in the summer when the kitchen's closed...that's my guess anyway.

When I stayed at school in the summer that was not the case. Of course only one dining hall was open as opposed to all of them.

But also my school wouldn't let you live on campus without a meal plan of some kind. Either on campus or off campus meal plan, but either way you had things paid before the semester started.

No meal plans over the summer, because our student center/union isn't a kitchen, it's a food court with actual food places, so they're just like, "Meh, you can pay cash."

Well that's what the meal plans were at my school, like you get 40 swipes or whatever that equal like $6 each or something, but you HAD to have it in order to stay there, so I didn't need to worry about food monies.

Ours is a debit system, dollar for dollar and it works in any cafeteria on campus as well as the student union during certain hours. But since there aren't many students on campus during the summer, and none of the kitchens are open, most of their business comes from the community eating at the student union, so they don't even bother with foodplans.

I would say do some sort of budget like Mandie and Boyd.

Do the necessities first, allow yourself some fun money, and put the rest into savings. Also keep some record of what you spend on what so you can look back and realize where your money is going.

Out of what you want to buy, I would say get tennis shoes and the rec center membership now since those seem like healthy things and then every few months when you have saved enough get another luxury like a piercing or tattoo.

I would say the easiest way to save some money is to cut down on eating out and make your own meals. Do you have access to a kitchen?

Oh and strangely enough I have almost the opposite problem, I save EVERYTHING and have guilt whenever I buy things. My mother was legitimately concerned that I would freeze to death in my house because I would be too cheap to turn up the heat or starve to death because I would be too cheap to buy decent food. I'm not that bad I swear, although I do limit my spending.

My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction Empty
PostSubject: Re: My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction   My 1st challenge in combatting spending addiction EmptyWed May 19, 2010 12:59 pm

LOL so I was reading this thread.. and thinking to myself that i have a slight problem with spending money myself.. but usually it's like a temporary problem where if I let myself eat out.. I'll always eat out.. but if I make myself buy stuff and cook and what not instead of eat out that's what I do.. but the moment I let myself eat out.. all the money I saved goes towards that and it's like an endless annoying process.. but I have never not paid my bills.. so at the same time those do get paid.

Anyway the reason I laughed is because when I read this thread I'm like I should put money towards my visa.. from my tax return.. I got into my other bank account.. and guess what I find MORE MONEY. You see I haven't done my taxes.. in 3 years.. this would have been the 4th year.. so i decided to do them all.. well they sent back the old ones.. and gave me an amount of money.. which I had already used parts of it.. some towards my visa and some towards my loan and I left like $400 of it in my other account to just sit there and save for now.. well they did my return for this year and added that amount too which was like another $1,042 or something like that and my mouth just dropped open LOL so I just put some more towards my visa and will probably put more towards my loan too but I'm just amazed that I got some extra money lol. After deciding how much to put on my loan I think my new plan of action is to just leave the rest of the money in that account to save it since I don't seem to touch it when it's in there.. mostly because that's a basic account and doing many transactions will cost money and I don't want to spend money on USING the money that's just silly! So maybe that's what you need to do Doug, make another bank account and put the money you want to save in there.. and just leave that card at home or something when you go out!
